Mr Speaker, Ladies and gentleman,

I should, first of all, like to thank you for the opportunity to speak to you today. I am here representing « sea shepherd conservation society ». I am reaching out to you because we need your help. Who doesn’t like sharks here ? Who is scared by sharks ? But really, it’s sharks who should be scared of us.

In my opinion, there are too much movies where sharks are represented as human eaters. That’s why a lot of people don’t feel concerned for the cause.

But today, sharks are in danger. Almost 100 million sharks are killed each year by fishermen or by a barbaric practice known as shark finning. It’s not shark fishing, but shark finning.

I will show you a video of the reality. Just, if someone doesn’t blood, please don’t watch.

So, we must stop the killing. We want to try to mobilize as many people as possible to be advocates for change.

With 90% of the world’s large shark population already wiped out, sharks are being depleted faster than they can reproduce. This jeopardizes the stability of marine ecosystems around the world. They have shaped marine life in the oceans for over 400 million years, since before the dinosaurs, and are essential to the health of our oceans and to the survival of humankind. Sustainable fisheries for sharks are possible, but have to be very closely managed.

We need your help for several reasons :

First, we say no to the suffering of sharks. We want an international law in order to confiscate illegally sharks fins and punish responsible for act of barbarism. We want prohibit shark finning.

Then, we say no to the extinction of sharks species. In 2016, we think it’s the time to change men and women. We should not forget that we don’t control the nature. And the nature is not our object. Sharks have their place in this world.

And we say no to the threat of the stability of marine ecosystems. Indeed, if there were no sharks, it would have more small fishes and they will eat all algue. In conclusion, small fishes will not have food and they will be dead a few years after the extinction of sharks. Fishing rates must be adjusted to the ability of sharks to reproduce.

And, to finish my speech, only 6 people are killed each year by sharks. But almost 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans. What you see here in the screen, it’s the number of sharks who are killed while I am talking.

We are running out of time. But we all have the power to make a difference. It is up to all of us, now, to collaboratively work together and save the sharks. To enforce the laws protecting them. To prevent this catastrophic extinction. Thank you.
