In 1786 the King of England decided to make New South Wales the destination of the deported, so they could no longer hurt Britain. The only aim was to unclog the prisons in England and, if possible, to create a colony by putting the convicts back to work. On 13 May 1787, a fleet, departed Portmouth, South of England, to Australia under the command of Captain ARTHUR PHILLIP. It was composed of more than 1000 people, including 750 prisoners (men and women commamed for various offenses), The journey lasted 8 months. So it was in January 1788 that North of the Bay of Port Jackson, first penitentiary colony and present Sydney. Captain ARTHUR PHILLIP baptized this place "Sydney Cove" in honor of Lord Sydney, British Minister of the Interior at that time. January 26, 1788 is considered the official date of the founding of the first colony in Australia of which Captain Arthur Phillip became the first governor. The "First Fleet" which arrived in 1788 consisted of 11 ships, 400 sailors and 4 companies of marine shotguns. There was enough cattle and provisions for two years. The "Second Fleet" arrived in 1790 and the Third in 1791: In total, the population was about 4,000 people The beginnings of the colony were extremely difficult. Because of the lack of knowledge of the environment, the first agricultural trials were catastrophic and famine threatened the colony. She managed to live despite it for 5 years. The fate of the Colony improved little by little and in 1792, food self-sufficiency was almost reached. The first convicts had served their sentences and were called "emancipated". Lands were allotted to them. Some convicts had married prisoners and had children who could be fed. These children were the first "whites" born in Australia. For 80 years prison colonies were established all over the continent. As early as 1793, the first free settlers settled in Australia. But until 1820, they were in a minority in front of the convicts and their descendants. They fought for the abolition of the deportation and obtained results more or less rapidly: In 1840, in New South Wales, in 1853 in Tasmania and in 1868 in Western Australia. The Victoria had always refused the convicts. In 1861, the population exceeded 1 million inhabitants with a single goal: To develop the country. For many, they provided technical knowledge and tools.
